The Indian Weavers

The Indian Weavers a.What are the weavers weaving at dawn? A. The weavers are weaving a blue garment for a new born child at dawn. b. Describe the garment that the weavers weave at night. A. The weavers weave a bright and colourful garment like the plumes of a peacock. They weave the marriage veil of a queen. c. Why are the weavers so serious at moonlight? A.The weavers are serious at night for they weave the shroud of a dead man. d. Write about the mood of the weavers from dawn till dusk. Does this have anything to do with the garments that they are weaving? A.The weavers are happy at dawn, their mood is energetic and enthusiastic at night but they become calm and serious. e. What message is conveyed in the poem? A. The weavers labour continuously from morning till night and their attitude affects the kind of work they produce. The poet has linked the stages of man’s life with the garments the weavers weave at different times of the day.

Bhagiratha and the Story of Ganga

Bhagiratha and the Story of Ganga Please refer to the text for  questions: a) There was a fierce battle between the asuras and the gods. The asuras hid in the waters of the ocean during the day and came out at night and attacked the gods. The gods went to Agastya seeking his help. The sage sucked in his breath and drank the water from the ocean till it became a dry bed. The asuras had no hiding place and they were defeated by the gods. b) King Sagara was grief stricken because his sons were burnt to ashes by one look from Sage Kapila’s eyes. c) Ganga was unwilling to come down to Earth as she was insolent and did not want to leave heaven. d) On Earth, Ganga flowed joyously and ceaselessly. Her rippling water flowed over plains and danced over cliffs. Her water filled the empty ocean and there was water on earth.

My Shadow

a.What is funny about the shadow? A. The funniest thing about the shadow is the way he likes to grow. He doesn’t grow like normal children. He sometimes becomes tall and sometimes so little that there is nothing of him at all. b. Why does the poet call the shadow a coward? A. The poet calls the shadow a coward because he sticks close behind the poet. He does not know how to play like other children. c. What happened one day when the poet woke up very early? A. One day when the poet woke up early and found dew on buttercups, his lazy shadow had stayed at home and was fast asleep. d. “And what can be the use of him is more than I can see.” Why does the poet say this? A. The poet says that the shadow is very like him from head to heels and cannot see any use of him.

The River Kaveri

The River Kaveri Please refer to the text for questions: a)Kaveri refused to marry any of the kings because she wanted to marry a man who was extraordinary in brains and wit; comparable to her creator Lord Brahma. b) Kaveri told Sage Agastya that she would marry him only if a part of her could be transformed into a river so that she could nourish her land. c) The gods wanted the River Kaveri to flow out of the kamandalu because they were worried about the situation caused by the drought.

The Little Boy Who Saved the Town a. Why did people build dikes around the town? a)People build dikes around the town to keep the sea out because the town was laid below the sea level. b)What did Hans see on his way to his friend’s place? A. On his way to his friend’s place, Hans saw a small hole in the dike from which a small thread of water was trickling. c)How did Hans save his town? A. Hans used his finger to plug the hole in the dike. Nobody passed by so he sat through the night. He was tired, cold and hungry but did not remove his finger. d) Why were the people thankful to Hans? A. The people were thankful to Hans for being thoughtful and saving the entire town from a calamity. e) Was it easy for Hans to save his town? Give reasons for your answer. A.It was not easy for Hans to sit with his finger in the hole in the dike for so many hours. He was cold, hungry, tired and all alone, yet he acted responsibly.
